Minnesota HIV program
We have a Deaf comm HIV and STD prevention education program in minn. We are doing a variety of prev ed proograms, including peer education, community workshops, dept of health networking, CDC advocacy efforts etc etc...we are in the process of developing a prev ed brochure...it should be printed soon. for more info contact
Nancy Emery (612) 297-6707 Voice TTY
Ron Harmount Jr. (612) 297 6709 TTY
We are trying to set up a broadcast fax networking monthly distribution. If anyone is interested let me know. It would incorporate prevention ed activities happening. If you would like to submit something contact Nancy. We would like to to a broadcast e mail as well. This may be the place to do it. This is the first time I have stopped here. It is a good resource.
We are in the process of applying for CDC funds to do more work in Mpls and St Paul. It is important for all of us working in HIV prevention ed and direct services to improve access to services and to ensure that information is culturally and linguistically appropriate. We are interested in hearing from anyone!
I have an idea to do a book/video in memory of Deaf community members we have lost to AIDS. We would need to get a national foundation to fund this. This is long term project. Anyone interested?

Indiana Cares about Deaf People
Hello ! This is David Cowan, Program Director of Deaf and Hard of
Hearing Services in Indianapolis, Indiana. I am new to this Internet.
It has been very fascinating to read all of other letters in the HIV/AIDS
in the Deaf Community. It's great to know that I am not alone in
this community. It's nice knowing that everyone is out there who
are concerned about this disease. Indianapolis is very conservative
and challenge experience for me in dealing with education and prevention
on HIV/AIDS. I wanted to express my compliements to Dragonsani Renteria
for her outstanding committment to help all the Gay & Lesbian Deaf People
in all walks of life to connect with each other through Internet. If
anyone interested in getting more information about my program, please
feel free to contact me at : e-mail " icdeaf@minfod.com ". Keep up the
great work you all do for gaining more awareness & information about HIV/
AIDS in the Deaf Community.

CDC does not count Deaf community
The key to working with and within the Deaf community and HIV prevention education is funding. The best source of funding currently is federal and state, but we don't have stats on how many Deaf and Hard of Hearing people have HIV, AIDS or who have already died. We need to advocate for designating the Deaf community as a community to be counted in state by state stats as well as CDC stats. The state of Minnesota has told us that what we need to do to count Deaf in MN is prove to them that the Deaf community has risk behaviors that cause HIV infection. Everyone in other states can also advocate with your own HIV prevention and direct services state agencies to count Deaf community members. If we do not count, then we don't get money.
I am currently working on a federal RFP and struggling to prove risk behaviors that will prove that HIV infection is worse for Deaf people. It is a challenge!
We just had a wonderful and successful commemoration of World AIDS Day in Minnesota. Ron Harmount Jr. Deaf HIV positive person and staff member of the Minn. Deaf Community HIV/AIDS and STD network made the front page of the St. Paul Pioneer Press newspaper, in full color. He performed a poem that he wrote while he was on the Twin Cities to Chicago AIDS Ride. It was beautiful. I am in the process of getting permission to use the photo. I will submit it to one of the Deaf web pages so you all can see it. We are all so very proud of him.
If someone could tell me which web page would work the best for this I would appreciate it...
Take care...everyone....be safe....communicate that safer sex and risk reduction message!
PS.I think another catagory should be added to the I am section. I am a hearing professional working in the field of deafness, not just a hearing signer...yes an interpreter....but not working in that interpreting field...smile

AIDS Project / Hartford, CT
My name is Rich Smalley, I am Director of Education at AIDS Project/Hartford, CT. I heard of your web site through a deaf friend. I am a founding member of the AIDS Initiative for Deaf Services (AIDS). Our Task Force has been existance for the past year and a half. We have had a group of students from the University of Hartford try and identify the number of HIV infected Deaf or hearing impaired people in Hartford. These students contacted over 400 physicians offices in the City of Hartford. According to the survey they identified 56 HIV infected Deaf or hearing impaired people in the City. Although this survey is not the most scientific way to measure the number of infected Deaf people, it does give us some numbers to work with, since the CT. Dept. of Public Health does not track the numbers of infected Deaf or hearing impaired people. Unfortunately, without numbers, there is no money.
Thank you for letting me share information about our organization. If anyone has any questions or is interested in the Task Force, please contact me at: 860.951-4791 V/TTY or e-mail: paul_botticello@ursa.hartnet.org Our mailing address: c/o AIDS Project/Hartford 110 Bartholomew Ave. Hartford, CT. 06106.

Help With Research! Do Deaf AIDS & HIV Patients Have Counseling Problems?
A medical research team at University of Pittsburgh wishes
to know if appropriate, and interpreted counseling services were
given to deaf victims of AIDS and of the HIV virus?
Was information withheld from the deaf at the clinics? Were
the deaf patients properly advised on the results of medical
tests? Were interpreters present at AIDS counseling meetings? Did
the deaf patients sense indifference from medical personnel? Did
deaf patients suspect that the medical clinics were in non-
compliance with the ADA regulations? Were there any deaf patients
turned away at medical clinics or refused care? Did any of the
deaf patients lose their jobs because of their medical prognosis.
And more?
The University of Pittsburgh team wants to hear from deaf
patients. All e-mail messages are kept in strictest confidence,
and there is NO NEED for deaf patients to disclose their real
names - nicknames or aliases are perfectly acceptable.
If you have concerns, please send e-mail to:

Thank you
Thank you for this important resource. This is the first and only thing on the www that I know of devoted to Deaf and AIDS issues. I look forward to seeing it expand and am excited about the upcoming section devoted to this topic. Keep up the wonderful work you're doing!

Re: Gally students?
I know of quite a few former Gally students who have passed away from AIDS. We've been working on collecting names and obituaries for our upcoming Deaf HIV/AIDS Resources section. When this list goes up, I'm sure you will (unfortunately) recognize quite a few names.
